Abstract: By comparing shear-layer widths based on depth-averaged velocity and bed shear stress, it is shown that the shear-layer width in the main channel of a compound channel flow depends upon the indicator variable chosen. A methodology is presented for calculating upper and lower bounds of the shear-layer width in a channel of finite width and applied to a compound duct flow.
