Towards an Adaptive Grid Procedure for River Flooding Development

Abstract: As a flood is traveling through a river valley, the flooded area can change considerably. In some cases, even small variations of the water level elevation could mean that thousand of square kilometers are flooded. In the paper a procedure for obtaining the development of a flooded zone is presented. A grid is continuously adapted to the flooded region. The adaptation of the grid is a function of the water level variations computed simultaneously with a 2D-depth averaged free-surface flood model. Some of the problems that can arise as the flood runs over the valley (as the appearance of islands or branches) are also discussed.
