Abstract: This paper presents two different methods for using local timesteps in the solution of open channel flows. These should be particularly advantageous when combined with spatial adaptivity. The methods are demonstrated in the context of a Riemann solver based method for the time dependent one-dimensional St. Venant equations. The resulting algorithm is applied to three test cases to show that run times are reduced with no significant loss of accuracy. The test cases cover steady and unsteady cases and the effects of varying bed slope, friction and consequent flow transitions.
