Abstract: Previous studies showed that linear stability analysis provides an ideal tool for understanding the physical mechanisms controlling shear flows in compound channels. This paper complements these previous studies by analyzing the significance of momentum correction coefficients (i. e., Boussinesq coefficients) on linear stability characteristics of shallow water flows in compound channels. It is shown that the critical bed-friction number depends on the relative magnitude of momentum correction coefficients ss 1 and ss 2 in the x and y directions, respectively. Computations show that there exist regions of stabilization and destabilization of the flow in the (ss 1 ss 2) -plane. In addition, it is found that the neutral stability curve of shear flows in compound channels is highly sensitive to the momentum correction coefficients.
