Abstract: Arsenic, boron and other inorganics in the Toyohira River system that is the main water source for public water supply of Sapporo City, Japan, were surveyed to assess their health risk. The studies were conducted to identify (a) the behavior of arsenic, boron and other inorganics in the river system, (b) the main source of them, and (c) the potential health risk of arsenic. Because the flow rate of hot spring water from riverbed was generally constant, arsenic and boron concentration were strongly influenced by the fluctuation of the river flow rate. It was also found out that “J” sewage treatment plant receiving waste hot spring water from the resort hotels was an instrument to minimize the arsenic concentration in the Toyohira River system.
