Abstract: The stability of a rockfill spillway is described by a hydrodynamic approach. Beside the safety against erosion of a single stone the stability of the rockfill cover as a whole can be estimated by a force balance. In a hydraulic large scale laboratory experiment the surplus of the tangential force which is not balanced by the activated friction force has been quantified by force measurements. The force balance on a single stone could be evaluated by pressure measurements on individual blocs. Hereby the classical geotechnical stability criteria has been proven not applicable because it overestimates the stability of the rockfill cover due to the neglection of the hydrodynamic forces.
