Abstract: The conventional quality inspection method of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD) compaction primarily relies on sampling randomly at job-site spots after compaction, which may cause unreliable representation of the compaction quality of the entire work unit using limited pit samples. Furthermore, the testing results cannot be obtained quickly, which leads the delay in performing the construction work and the hindrance in feedback control of compaction quality. The compaction value (CV) is presented as a measure of the real-time compaction quality, which can be obtained by the developed compaction status monitoring device. Based on a thorough correlation analysis between CV, the proportion of aggregate diameter less than 5 mm (P5) and the observed dry density at the sampled spots, a multiple regression model, i. e. fast compaction quality assessment model is established to calculate CFRD materials’ dry density. Then, by using the Kriging interpolation method, the dry density at any location of the entire work area can be estimated, moreover, the overall passing rate of compaction quality of the work area can also be analyzed. The case study demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method, which not only enables the evaluation of compaction quality covering 100% of the work area, thus reducing the uncertainty of quality inspection associated with random spot tests, but also provides a new way for real-time quality control of CFRD construction.
