Abstract: The lateral intake-outlet has good hydraulic performance for bi-direction flow. It has been widely applied to pumped storage power stations and other water conducting projects. Research on hydraulic characteristics of lateral intake-outlets was carried out by hydraulic model test. The study relied on upper and lower intake-outlets of Xiangshuijian Pumped Storage Power Station. The model tests included both outflow mode and inflow mode. Much attention was paid to study whether there would be surface vortex at outer-upper area of lateral intake-outlets under inflow mode, because the harmful vortex would affect the safety of project. The rotational flow would occur at outer-upper area of upper and lower lateral intake-outlets under inflow mode. The theoretic solutions of hydrodynamics are given in the paper. The “anti-vortex baffle” was provided between trash rack piers of lower intake-outlets; it was for the first time proposed in the study and demonstrated by model test. It has been applied to the lower lateral intake-outlets of engineering prototype. The tangential velocity of vortex was measured at outer-upper area of upper lateral intake-outlets, and then the depth of vortex could be calculated by using the theoretic solution of the vertical-axes vortex, which was proposed by the author in 2001. The depth of vortex was considered as an index to judge the rationality of the outer boundary condition of upper lateral intake-outlets. And a few excavation schemes were studied to modify the outer boundary. Such test scheme as well as measurement method were also proposed for the first time in the study. The upper and lower reservoirs and power station of the Xiangshuijian Pumped Storage Project have been put into operation since 2011.
