Abstract: The secondary water supply system (SWSS) is an important part of the water distribution system (WDS), which plays an essential role in satisfying the demand of high elevated receivers. At present many big storage tanks are used in SWSS of most cities in China. The operation of these water tanks has great influences on the spatio-temporal distribution of water pressure of the primary water supply network which is important to the pipe network’s safety and energy consumption. In this paper hydraulic model for a designed WDS was developed based on EPANET. The spatio-temporal water pressure was then modeled under two different kinds of water tanks’ operation patterns. And then their impact on the primary water supply network was analyzed to obtain the optimal operation pattern of water tanks. Finally, genetic algorithm (GA) was applied to investigate the optimal water tanks’ regulation combination. The results showed that it could be beneficial to the primary water supply network if Tank-Level Regulation was adopted to regulate the SWSS tanks and GA was effective and efficient to solve this problem.
