An Assessment of Runoff Trends in Fenhe Catchment and Its Potential Cause

Abstract: Runoff in Fenhe catchment, which is located in the middle Yellow River catchment, decreases sharply in recent years. The earliest drought happened in 1958 in the Yitang hydrological station in the middle river and in 1971 in the Hejin hydrological station over the section close to the Yellow River. The most serious drought happened in 1995 with drying up for more than 102 days in Hejin station. This study presents results of trend tests applied to annual runoff time series for different stations in Fenhe river catchment, with a view to discerning natural variability and artificial influence on runoff. Stronger evidence of runoff decreasing over 50 years was found at each hydrological station of the Fenhe river catchment. The findings have some parallels with climate-change scenarios, although there were also climate index over this timescale. The artificial influence on runoff is also important, which is likely to assess in the significance of trends with the statistics method. The study provides a baseline for discerning runoff change of the Fenhe catchment.
