Abstract: The temperature of the water released from the reservoir is vital to the hydro environment and aquatic ecology at downstream. Bailianya Reservoir is located at the upstream of pi river, which is main tributary of the Huaihe River. The maximum dam height is 104. 6 metre with total reservoir storage capacity of 460 million m3. The reservoir was mainly built for flood control, power generation, irrigation, and water supply However, the reservoir operation would inevitably have negative effect on the downstream aquatic ecosystem by releasing the comparably cool water. Therefore, the water temperature distribution in the reservoir should be indentified for environment protection. In this paper, the vertical temperature distribution was predicted by using the empirical Dongkanyuan method. the vertical temperature data in front of the dam have been collected within one year. The simulated water temperature stratification in Bailianya Reservoir water is gentle, while the constant temperature layer have been found below 156 meters. The significant thermocline could not be indentified with the empirical method. Based on the analysis of temperature measurements, the water temperature stratification in the reservoir is obvious with constant temperature layer below 160 meters. The evident thermocline can be found between160m and 165m. The water is released from the inlet at 165m which ensures the minimum negative effects on the downstream hydro environment.
