Abstract: When the 2011off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake occurred in Japan on March 11, 2011, the associated tsunami damaged many bridge girders. In order to protect bridges and to reduce the potential fordamage duringa tsunami, it is important to reinforce bridges. To accomplish this, accurate and in-depth research into the behavior of a tsunami around a bridge and the tsunami force acting on a bridge is required. Our group developed athree-dimensional numerical analysis based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method for analyzing tsunami behavior. In this study, this method was applied to hydraulic experiments to verifythe applicability of the code for estimating the tsunami forces on a bridge. The obtained numerical results are compared with the results of parameters in experiments, i. e., thehorizontal forces, vertical forces, and pressures acting on the two types of girder models. As a result, the code simulated each time series variation of the tsunami forces well. It is concluded that our code can predict tsunami forcesthat acton bridge girders.
