Abstract: The scour and silting variation of the riverbed will greatly change in future in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River after the operation of the Three Gorges reservoir in 2003. Prototype measurement, flow and sediment mathematical model and experimental model were generally used to elucidate the rules of the scour and silting variation. This study attempts to introduce the system dynamics method. According to the hydrological data in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from Changjiang Water Resources Commission, the main influence factors related to the scour and silting variation, such as sediment deposition, sediment-carrying capacity, flow and so on, were analyzed and the causalities between the factors were studied. On this basis, the mathematical model of system dynamics simulation was built and the causalities were converted to functional relationships to input model. The simulation results can explain the rules between the scour and silting variation and the influence factors. In addition, it can predict the scour and silting variation amount of the riverbed in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
