Abstract: Because the channel of the middle reaches of Huaihe River is small and the slope of river is gentle, the flood drainage is often blocked. The flood level is high when middle or small flood happens, and the controlling of flood becomes more difficult. Further more, the flood from the middle reaches and that from the main stream meets together, the water level keeps high for long time, then large area of flood happens in Huaibei plain which we call “Guan Men Yan”. There are many flood diversion plains in the middle reaches of Huaihe River, but the designed flood discharge capacity can not be obtained because of the opening time and application effect. In this article, the basic features, practical problems and the present ability for travelling flood in the middle reaches of Huaihe River are analysed according to the observed hydrological data and the river longitudinal profile, and it is advised that flood diversion plains adjustment should be coordinated with the river regulation, and the full channel discharge should be equivalent to the dominate discharge. In this way, the ability for travelling flood can be improved and the flood level would be lower, the duration for “Guan Men Yan” can be shortened and the riverbed can be maintained stability. These can offer technical references for further controlling the middle reaches of Huaihe River.
