Abstract: The flow field and hydrodynamic forces on submerged rectangular cylinders were simulated using a Large Eddy Simulation model. The simulation results are validated by the experimental results of previous studies. Then the numerical model is utilized to examine the influences of the Froude number, the blockage ratio and the proximity ratio on the drag and lift coefficients. Our results demonstrate that the drag and lift coefficients are dependent on the cylinder Froude number FrD. In sub-critical flows, the drag coefficient increased as the blockage ratio increased because of the blockage effect. For super-critical flows, the water surface rose up in front of the cylinder and creating a large standing wave behind the cylinder. This phenomenon significantly affects the drag and lift coefficients experienced by the cylinder.
