Abstract: The flow state around hydraulic structures such as groins and weirs composed of connected stones is extremely complicated. Therefore, more accurate approach velocities must be used in designing these structures considering such structures' stability against floods. This paper describes three-dimensional flow simulations for hydraulic structures composed of connected stones. The simulations were conducted to investigate the approach velocity and its applicability. Numerical results can explain the water level and velocity profiles around permeable hydraulic structures comprising connected stones. Furthermore, the obtained approach velocity is sufficiently accurate for design use.
