Abstract: Heavy metals in sediments from Zhangweinan Canal were detected by ICP-MS. The results indicated that the distribution characteristics of heavy metals, including Cu, Zn, Pb, As and Cr, were in the similar trend, the concentrations of which were in the order of Wei river > Wei canal > New Zhangwei river. Zn、Pb、As were the main heavy metal pollutants in Wei river section. The average contents of these heavy metals in sediments from Wei river were 115、11. 6、32. 9 and 155mg/kg (dry) respectively, which is higher than the sediment background value in China. For the section of Wei Canal, it was Zn and As that exceeded the background value; While, As stood out in New Zhangwei river section. The degree of pollution and ecological risk were evaluated by the index of geoaccumulation and the Hakanson ecological risk index. The results showed that the geoaccumulation index of the heavy metals in the studied river was in the order of As, Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb. While, from the perspective of the overall pollution, the ecological risk of the heavy metals in sediments of the studied river was in the order of As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn. In general, most of the studied heavy metals presented low levels of the potential ecological risk throughout the studied watercourse, except As with high potential ecological risk index, to which more attention should be paid.
