Abstract: A reconstruction of the kayak racing channel is being planned in Solkan, the Soca River, Slovenia. In order to assist the designer in optimizing the shape and functionality of the new course, numerical simulations of flow in the channel have been performed using the two-dimensional depth-averaged mathematical model PCFLOW2D developed at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering of the University of Ljubljana. Main characteristics of the control volume based numerical method are staggered grid, hybrid space scheme, iterative procedure of depth corrections and a fully implicit time scheme. A relatively dense numerical mesh with the uniform space step Dx = Dy = 1 m and 84372 points was used. The model was successfully calibrated with field measurements of water levels and discharge distributions along the present channel. A sensitivity analysis of the influence of different turbulence models (constant turbulent viscosity coefficient, Smagorinsky model, k – ε model) on flow predictions was also performed. As a final result of simulations, flow fields and water surface elevations in the reconstructed channel at different discharges were obtained. Recirculation zones behind obstacles and water level rise in front of them were well predicted. The model has proved to be a very useful tool in designing new kayak channels and can successfully replace the more expensive physical hydraulic models that are still mostly used in such situations.
