Abstract: The vertical slot fishway has a large amount of practical use in the world because of high efficiency of passing fishes and adapting to the change of water level. In the earlier research, the authors worked out effective range of geometric size, which included the ratio of length to width of the fishway pool, the ratio of the vertical slot’s width to the pool’s width, etc. But the effective range is worked out in the condition of that the average velocity of vertical slot section is only 1 m/s. In this paper, the flow structure in vertical slot fishway is studied when the average velocity in vertical slot section is 0. 8, 1. 0, 1. 2, 1. 5, 1. 8, 2. 0 m/s separately by the way of numerical simulation. The results show that in the range of 0. 8~2. 0m/s, the value of average velocity in vertical slot section has no significant influence on the velocity distribution of mainstream in pools, and vertical slot section, too. The effective range of geometric scale proposed in the earlier research has a certain universality.
