Abstract: In Nakdong River which is located at Republic of Korea, a number of globular shape GPS floaters were spread for analysis of the floating pollutant mixing which has the highest percentage among water pollution accidents. GPS sensor in a floater recorded its position at every 3 seconds in longitude and latitude coordinates. GPS floaters traveled downstream about 700 m for 90 minutes and then collapsed to the left bank due to the local flow structure at the water surface. The LPT model was used to represent the field experiment. After converting the longitude-latitude coordinates of measured data into the TM coordinate, the particle positions of both field experiments and simulation results were plotted in the scatter diagram and determined the dimensionless horizontal diffusion coefficient as 0. 17. Using the conversion code developed in this study, the particle position information was converted into the concentration distribution to analyze the mixing characteristics of the tracer cloud at the water surface. The comparison of measured and simulated concentration distributions showed that the peak concentrations of the simulated results were similar with the experimental results. Span-wise diffusion of particles showed that both the experimental results and the simulation results approached to the left bank where the Bonri pumping station is located. Therefore, the proper disaster protection measures are necessary on the left bank of downstream of the Samunjin Bridge when the floating pollutant is spilled at this area.
