Abstract: A lake play an important role on local social and economic sustainable development. But in recent years, there were still numerous contradictions between protection and exploitation, Causing serious damages to ecological conditions on lakes. To establish a scientific and effective management method on lakes, ecological features and environmental factors of lakes, connotations and objectives of lake health, were discussed in details. A set of indicators including natural characters and social functions, containing 8 essential indexes as well as grading standards of indicators were established, and a corresponding assessing modeling method was proposed. The above index system and method were applied to the case study of 5 lakes in Southern Jiangsu Province for the health level assessment, including Taihu Lake, Shijiuhu Lake, Gehu Lake, Changdanghu Lake and Guchenghu Lake. health levels, current problems, and some suggestions for the next protection were put forward basing on 2 years’ assessment results (2010-2011) on 5 lakes.
