The Development of Constriction Scour Within the Vicinity of Short-Span Arch Bridges, Under Pressurized Flow

Abstract: This paper presents initial findings from an experimental investigation into the depth of scour within the vicinity of single span arch bridges with a focus on spans up to 25 metres. Pressurized flow gives rise to high bed velocities and subsequent scouring of piers and abutments within vertical and horizontal constrictions in open channels. Scour depth profiles are measured within the vicinity of the archfor a series of flows with one model bridge span. The data is presented, where results are correlated to the most recent predictive equations that are proposed for the determination of scour depth under combined horizontal and vertical bridge flow constrictions. Initial relationships between the experimental parameters and scour depth are presented and correlated to the overall depth of scour. With these findings, the work of previous researchers has been suggested to be further developed into fully understanding the development of arch bridge scour under pressurized flow conditions.
