Abstract: The scour produced by the action of a ship’s propeller is becoming an increasing problem. The erosion of the harbour sediment due to the propeller jets can result in the undermining of quay walls and the release of pollutants from the sea-bed. This has led to requirements for the prediction of the maximum depth of scouring, and the rate of development of scouring close to quay structures. Based on an experimental investigation, the influence of the ship’s rudder and nearby quay wall proximity on the scouring process is discussed in relation to scour and velocity prediction equations.
