Abstract: This paper describes the density currents with thermal convection over a slope under the condition of cooling period in the northern part of Lake Biwa, which is considered as one of the main mechanisms of vertical mixing in the water column of the Lake. 3-D simulations of the flow induced by thermal convection are conducted under the two-layered stratified water condition to study the effect of a slope representing the shore part of the Lake. It is pointed out through the examination of simulated results that density currents are generated over a slope attached to a rectangular solid due to the rapid cooling near the water surface, but are not strong enough to intrude under the lower layer with low temperature.
