Abstract: One-dimensional (1D) numerical models are commonly used to simulate flood wave propagation resulting from dam failures. However, in certain cases 1D models may not accurately simulate the flood wave dynamics, especially when the domain is complex. The present study is an example in which a two-dimensional (2D) model was used to overcome the limitations of a 1D model in the simulation of a flood wave resulting from a breach of a structure that spills water into a complex area consisting of roads and wide-open farmland with no defined channels. TELEMAC-2D was used to simulate the overland flow across an area of approximately 30 km2 before it spills into the valley of a large river. While a numerous studies have been conducted by others to develop or validate 2D models for dam-breach flood hydraulics, this study demonstrates a practical engineering application of numerical modelling techniques for a complicated large-scale dam-breach inundation study.
