Restoration of Riffles and Pools Within Improved Channels in Meandering Rock-Bed Rivers

Abstract: For preserving a comfortable river ecosystem, it is important to protect and restore the riffles and pools within engineered channels, where should play a role in the habitat diversity and complexity. It will be no easy task to restore and preserve the pool-riffle in flat rock-bed river which is lightly covered with gravels, as contrasted with in the gravel river. In the Abashiri River, the improvement by channel deepening projects with rock-bed has been carried out, in which was introduced to construct artificial pools for restoration of the riffles and pools. This study verifies the situation of the present and the future restoration by field survey and undistorted model experiment approach. It shows that point bars were formed on the opposite shore of artificial pools, and riffles were in the downstream of the pools. It is verified that the artificial pools did not deposit overall with most of the flow concentrated in the pools when the flood occurred. Therefore, it is possible to preserve the artificial pools and riffles naturally.
