Abstract: Shuangtai wetland is located on the Liaohe Delta, one of the National Nature Reserves in China and also a place of reed-producing area for paper industry. To evaluate the impact of reed colonies on surface soil water movement, field study was conducted in 2011. Continuous measurements of surface water level, soil water content (FDR method) and ground water level were taken. Besides, soil samples were collected for analyzing rootstock content and soil properties. A vertical 1D water transport mode was constructed for the simulation of vertical groundwater movement to understand the variation of soil water content. Model parameters were determined from the soil sample analysis and related existing studies. Specially, in the model the soil layer was divided into two layers for a better description of the role of reed roots distribution. Computation result well reproduced the dynamic fluctuation of observed water content profile especially in the surface soil layer of 20 cm thick in which reed rootstock were contained. The results suggest that the reference of hydraulic characteristics of rootstock-containing soil is important for the water condition in the reed colony wetland.
