Abstract: The amount and spatial distribution of bed load particles contribute significantly to riverbed changes. Therefore, the prediction of bed load transport rate is an important aspect of river planning. This work can be effectively supported through numerical simulation by detailed analyses of flow components and sediment transport inside watersheds. The purpose of this research is to develop a two-dimensional depth-averaged numerical model for flow and sediment transport using eight bed load transport equations to predict the bed variation in steep slope channels. The two-dimensional depthaveraged shallow water equations along with the sediment continuity equation are solved by using the Marker and Cell explicit scheme. The research compares a number of bed load transport formulas that have been tested as well as the measured experimental data, such as Shields (1936); Schoklitsch (1943); Bagnold (1956); Engelund and Fredsoe (1976); Duboys (1879); Madsen (1991); Nielsen (1992) and Cheng (2002). The differences found between the measured experimental data and the numerical simulation for both flow and the bed variations of bed deformation showed that the numerical model used in this research is useful for the analysis and prediction of riverbed level variations.
