Abstract: In order to avoid excessive discharge variation in stepped low-pressure water-supply system, severe hydraulic oscillation, especially hydraulic resonance is not allowed in these systems. To ensure the system’s stability, hydraulic oscillation analysis should be conducted for design and operation. This paper presents a linear model on the governing equations of the flow in pressurized pipelines, which describe the hydraulic oscillation in stepped low-pressure water-supply system with short open channel. Based on modern control theory, the oscillation characteristics of the water-supply system under weir flow mode and well flow mode in the weir wells were analyzed. Compared with the system which does not have short open channels, the flow pattern of system with short open channel has relatively been improved. The latter can avoid the drastic hydraulic oscillation effectively, providing the suggestions for the design and optimization of water-supply system.
