Abstract: This paper describes the development of a Bayesian model for surface water quality evaluation, in terms of appropriateness of existing quality with regards to the designated best use. The model is based on the water quality information of polluted river stretches collected from the repository of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India. Water quality variables included in the study are pH, temperature, DO, BOD, COD, Total Coliform and fecal coliform. The causal relationship amongst these variables encoded in the Bayesian model along with associated statistical parameters helped to achieve at suitable water quality class based on water quality index. The model thus developed can serve as an effective communication tool for the decision makers in managing water quality of polluted rivers.
