Abstract: Based on resistance partitioning method and uncertainty principle, flow resistance in mountain rivers can be divided into three parts: (1) base resistance nS for a straight, smooth, uniform channel; (2) resistance caused by protuberance in riverbed nB; (3) physiognomy and river geometry resistance nG, in which, base resistance equals to that of the glass flume. Based on analysis of data and theoretical analyses, a relation between blockages factor B and resistance caused by protrusions on riverbed was derived. Riverbed slope S is adopted as a key factor to calculate physiognomy and river geometry resistance, and then the method for calculating the total resistance was obtained. Finally this method was used in Longxi River, and the method was proved to be reasonable, but some uncertainty still exists and the key problem was discussed.
