Abstract: The present study was carried out to investigate the propagation characteristics of the flood wave in an inundation area due to levee breach depth. For study, a propagation distance, a propagation velocity, variations of the water level and variations of the maximum depth were measured. As a result of measurement, around the levee breach point, the propagation velocity is mainly depending on the levee breach depth. However, the general trends have the similarity with a special condition that the levee breach depth is 0 (H0=Hw). On the basis of measurements, coefficients k and m were calculated which were suggested by Toshiji Ariga (1977). In addition, an empirical formula which has the highest coefficient of determination was suggested using correlation analysis of dimensionless variables. The suggested formula was derived under a limited condition that the inundation area is flat and it is made of cement mortar. The empirical formula could be used as an important fundamental data for a feasibility study of experiments.
