Abstract: Reservoirs are very important water resource in Taiwan. Sedimentation and high-turbidity flow by heavy rains have been exigent issues and attracted more public attention recently. It is necessary to estimate flow by heavy rains to assess the sediment carried into reservoir. But there are lack of on-site data. A project was given by Taiwan’s southern region water resources office in 2006 to estimate flow at the watershed of Tesngwen Reservoir located in southern Taiwan. Flow was estimated by recorded water depth by Typhoon Bilis and Typhoon Kaemi which struck Taiwan in July, 2006. Rating curves of water depth vs. flow were then calculated for both typhoons. The result of this project provides an simple and practicable approach to estimate and monitor flow during heavy rains.
