Using Instructional Simulations to Teach the Causes and Impacts of Reservoir Sedimentation

Abstract: Reservoir sedimentation poses a great threat to the vitality of the world’s reservoirs. Managing reservoir sedimentation requires an intimate knowledge of the governing physical processes behind sediment transport. In an effort to effectively broaden education on this subject, this paper discusses the merits of computer-based learning modules. All personnel associated with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of dams and reservoirs can interact with these modules to gain contextualized knowledge of sediment processes while solving realistic problems. The following paper explains the instructional psychology behind these modules and describes a pilot module, which has already been created
