Abstract: Experiments are conducted in compound meandering channels with partially roughened floodplain by blocks to investigate the effect of blocks on the beahviour of stage-discharge curve, sediment transport rate and bedform. Rectangular blocks are used as vegetation and placed along the edge of meandering compound channel for attempting to show flow interaction between the floodplain flow and the main channel flow. Various densities of blocks are also used to investigate the density effect on stage discharge curve, sediment transport rate and bedforms. Stage-discharge curves for different block densities in the fixed bed case are quite different from those in the mobile bed case. Flow resistance is much higher in the mobile case than in the fixed bed case. The sediment transport rate decreases differently in shallow water depth range for different block arrangement. Block density and arrangement significantly affect the behaviour of overall flow resistance and sediment transport rate in the compound meandering channel.
