Abstract: This paper presents the results of numerical simulation of weak swirling flow fields in a turbid water hydraulic separation device (TWHSD) with 3 schemes of grid division, and analytical comparison between the calculation results and experiment values. An optimal grid division scheme is selected and turbulent flow field in the device has been simulated with the RNG model and the RSM model, respectively. The results show that tangential velocity in the device, except for the near-wall region, possesses characteristics of forced-vortex flow, which is beneficial for separation of water and sediment. On the other hand, the radial velocity has decreased in the radius direction and has its maximum value at a location near the center of the device, which is consistent with theoretical analysis. In addition, a preliminary analysis of Reynolds-stress indicates that the turbulent flow in the device can approximately be treated as isotropy. Considering simulation precision and time consumption, it is suggested to apply the RNG model instead of RSM model, which is more time consuming.
