Abstract: Normal depth is one of the most significant parameters in hydraulic analyses of open channel flow and has a great effect in designing process of open channels. There are different methods for determining normal depth value but, as the governing equations for the practical channel sections are implicit so the solution requires tedious methods of trial and error. Also, tabular and graphical methods are available mostly for common cross sections and have errors of interpolation and estimation in reading the graphs. In this paper, a method for calculation of normal depth in open channels, based on Genetic Algorithm (GA), is presented. Basis of this method is to transform the Manning equation into the objective function followed by minimization of this objective function with GA leading to calculation of normal depth. This method does not have limitations of existing methods and can be used for any prismatic and non-prismatic open channels. The comparison between the results of present study and usual soft-wares shows the high efficiency of this method.
