Abstract: Recent advances in cyber-tools and methods (sensors, sensing networks, numerical and data models) are increasingly available, and sufficiently developed to aid quantifiable understanding of the watershed water cycle processes and their interactions with the bio-geochemical and socio-economical processes supported by it. Parallel advances in highperformance computing, communication technologies, GIS-based tools along with innovative statistical, data-driven models, and knowledge discovery models, can characterize the physicalbiochemical habitat with increased spatial resolution over large-scale areas. Collectively, these advances help facilitate high-fidelity, first-principles based, “information-centric” investigative and management approaches to addressing watershed ecosystem changes, as well as to predict and prevent natural and human disasters through knowledge-based adaptive management. The paper describes representative frameworks for watershed science and management emphasizing their commonalities and the need to merge their developments in a common effort.
