Abstract: It is a difficult design problem to arrange aerators on a mildly sloping spillway tunnel with a large unit discharge capacity and low Froude number. In order to e liminate the backwater in the cavi ty of the first aerator in the flood d ischarge tunnel of the Dagangshan hydropower project, Sichuan, China, an investigation of 3 types of aeration device was carried out using a numerical model and physical model experiments. The calculated numerical results have been shown to be in good agreement wi th those of the experiments and indicate that the complex backwater flow patterns in the cavities can be simulated well by the numerical model. The particular feature highlighted in this paper is that the proposed aerator with U-shaped ramp, combined with a local steep-slope section, can avoid accumulating wa ter in the cav i ty of the firs t aera t ion dev ice in the flood d ischarge tunne l of Dagangshan project. Although some specific details are particular to the projec t in question, the gene ral features are of practical significance and may be of interest to those engaged in the des ign of similar types of scheme.
