Abstract: Holed bed was proposed as a new method to improve the energy dissipation of the hydraulic jump formed in a radial stilling basin. Experiments were carried out in a laboratory flume to determine the dissipation characteristics of the holed bed using different holes diameters for a range of the Froude number. Dimensional analysis approach was used to develop functional relationships between the variables involved in the radial stilling basin including the hydraulic jump and the holed bed characteristics. Analysis of the experimental results was performed to obtain the optimum diameter of the bed holes which gives the maximum energy dissipation and the minimum length of the stilling basin. Empirical equations were developed to relate the energy dissipation of hydraulic jump to some relevant parameters. The ratio of optimum diameter for the bed holes to the channel width was found to be 0. 0315.
