Abstract: The flow features in plunge pools were investigated using a novel large scale Particle Image Velocimetry setup allowing for simultaneous and non-intrusive velocity measurements. The velocity vector fields were recorded in different horizontal and vertical planes allowing for a quasi-spatial visualization of the velocity field. To visualize and investigate the main flow structures, vector and streamline plots were determined for each plane. The results give insight into the generated main flow structures, namely the spatial jet diffusion including its velocity magnitudes and the induced recirculations and singularities. This work, therefore, provides a basis for advanced experimental investigations regarding the flow features of plunge pool scour.
