Abstract: This paper presents the application of a recently developed physics based model that predicts scour formation downstream of spillways. The time evolution of the scour and the ultimate scour profile were measured. Experiments were carried outwith uniform sediment for various jet velocity, and drop height of jet. The scour profiles at different times follow a particular geometrical similarity and can be expressed by a polynomial using relevant parameters. The characteristic parameters affecting the time variation of scour depth are identified based on the physical reasoning and dimensional analysis. It was found that the scour geometry is a function of densimetric Froude number and time. It is observed that, by increasing the drop height, dimension of scour hole increase. New empirical equations for the prediction of scour hole geometry are presented. The emphasis of this article is on time duration.
