Abstract: The focus of this work is on the validation of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation code, Mike 3 Flexible Mesh, via idealized test problems which have been analysed intensely experimentally and analytically in the past. Two problems were examined: the three-dimensional wind-driven circulation in a small, rectangular lake and unsteady, turbulent, open-channel flow over a mild slope. Simulations were performed keeping mesh aspect ratios (vertical to horizontal dimensions) to ranges approaching those possible for the field scale cases, rather than pushing them to limits feasible only in idealized problems. In both cases, the code produced satisfactory results. Moreover, the MIKE 3 FM (HD) code, has been applied to investigate barotropic, wind-driven-circulation scenarios in the Gulf of Patras (Greece).
