Abstract: In present paper, formula of long wave speed in a straight uniform channel with triangular cross section is derived. The shape of cross section was selected to test the formula with available independent experimental data. Good agreement with experiments permits to expand the analysis for the channels of different geometry. Formula for similar wave of small intensity (negligible height) was obtained too. Energy approach, which is application of the theory of energy propagation for fluid flow analysis, was used for understanding of long wave travel. Besides the derivation of the formulae, another objective of the paper is development of the methodology. In the analysis, formation of water motion by moving paddle is considered that is simulated long wave formation due to water release from reservoir or dam break. This model permits to evaluate the energy obtained by fluid whereas wave speed is presented as function of the energy amount.
