Empirical Formula for Propagation Distance of Flood Wave-Front in Flat Inundation Area Without Structure Due to Levee Breach

Abstract: In the present study, experiments were carried out to investigate propagation distance of a flood wave in a flat inundation area without a structure due to levee breach. Experimental results in this study were compared with Ritter’s solutions and, in addition, empirical solutions suggested by previous researchers were tested. As a result of the experiments, it was found that the propagation velocity of the wave front in the inundation area was influenced strongly by the initial water level in a channel, which was similar to a dam breach flow. New values for coefficients, k and m, in the representative form were suggested using the experimental results. The dimensionless propagation distance L can be written as the power function of dimensionless time T. The coefficients, k and m, were varied with the dimensionless time T whereas those in Ritter ’s solution are constant as 2 and 0, respectively. The variation of the coefficients in the relationship between L and T depends on the water depth in the inundation area. The finding proved that the changing points of L in the slope of relationship between L and T are same to those of relationship between dimensionless maximum water depth in inundation area, hmax and L.
