Abstract: Rehabilitation of the water quality in Hori River located at Nagoya city in JAPAN has been a long outstanding problem. In this study, the characteristics of water flow and water quality in Hori River are evaluated by use of observation data for the purpose of finding a solution to the water quality problems. Firstly, the characteristics of water flow and salinity change in spring tide and neap tide are discussed. Secondly, the characteristics of turbidity and DO distribution concerning with tidal flow are evaluated. From these studies, it is found that the water flow is influenced by riverbed shape and destratification and that increasing of DO value at bottom layer due to vertical mixing occur in flood tide during spring tide. Moreover, high turbidities at bottom layer in spring tide and at middle layer in neap tide are also found out. From the observation on water quality in the downstream area of Hori River, it is shown that the effect of aeration facilities on DO value is limited to neighborhood of the facilities. On the other hand, the inflow from Nakagawa Canal may strongly affect water quality change in the downstream of Hori River. It is suggested that the inflow from Nakagawa Canal is an effective measure for the improvement of water quality in Hori River.
