Spatiotemporal Changes of the Sand Barrier Using Marine Charts Analysis in the Nakdong River Estuary

Abstract: Nakdong river estuary located at the south-eastern coast of the Korea peninsula shows unstable topographical changes due to the various uses of the wet-land area and/or the continuous changes of interacting environmental factors such as sediment, wave and current. A lot of studies have been carried out on the generation and development of shoal, the longterm topographical changes, and the coastal process such as sediment transport and topographical changes. No one, however, have discussed clearly the generation and development mechanism of the shoal and the wet-land development behind the shoal. The aim of the study is designated to clarify the mechanism of the generation and the development of the shoal in front of beach face, through new temporal scales. For the goal, this study was carried out mainly by the field works measuring the changes of bottom topography and the wave conditions around Jinudo where shoals are being actively generated and developed in the estuary. To discuss the global system, the macroscale changes of bottom topography and wave characteristics in the estuary have been analyzed by historical charts. In addition, initial generation condition and development process of the shoal are discussed. Main results are summarized as follows. (1) The average distance between shoal group 1 and 2 is 1, 241 m and 1, 279 m respectively, and the distance maintains a constant size and the shoals are being developed toward offshore. (2) It is evident that sandy shoals in the shape of multibars are being developed near Jinudo, and their annual growth toward offshore is 7. 4 m in the case of the Jinudo and 26 m in the case of Sinjado (3) It is observed that the average amount of area changes in Nakdong river estuary is approximately 22. 63 km2, which is summed by the average area change of wet lands, 19. 81 km2, and that of shoals, 2. 82 km2.
