Spatial Pattern and Predicting Factor of Flood And

Abstract: Annual rainfall data from 104 gauge stations during the periods of 1957-2002 over North China was examined. The EOF analysis is used to quantify the spatial pattern and evolution of annual rainfall anomalies with time. The composite of main flood years and main drought years were obtained based on the analysis of PC1. The composite of geopotential height of atmospheric circulation at 500 hPa for flood years and drought years of annual rainfall were also gotten. The Baikal high index was defined according to the difference of the composite of geopotential height of atmospheric circulation of flood years and drought years. The results reveal that the EOF1 shows high-variance and has the same sign over North China, suggesting that spatial pattern of annual rainfall is of coherence of wet year or dry year covering the entire North China, that PC1 is related to annual mean rainfall area averaged and is of good correspondence with the annual rainfall, and that the Baikal high index can be used as a predicting factor for flood year and drought year.
