Abstract: This article deals with the hydrological modelling of the runoff by utilising the distributed model NAVMO for the Piranhas river basin, located in the semiarid region of the state of Paraiba, Brazil. The model was first calibrated for a sub-basin of the Piranhas river, the Piancobasin (4550 km 2), and then used to simulate the water discharge in the main basin (~15000 km 2). The analyses were carried out using different groups of parameter values to simulate the discharge of various tributary basins for which data were available. The results obtained showed that the model simulated the discharge reasonably well in all the sub-basins, opening a perspective for future model applications for investigating the effects of land use and climate variabilities on the hydrological responses in the region.
