Abstract: In the frame of risk assessment and risk management the determination of the failure probability of dams plays an important role. In this paper the probabilistic approach that has been elaborated for the hydraulic failure by the authors in the nineties will be further developed and refined. Further it is shown, how the random event “gate failure” can be taken into account instead of the n-1-rule (normally used to ensure the design discharge with one of the gates or valves unable to function).
